UN experts call on UK and France to scrap "one in, one out" asylum deal

United Nations officials are calling on the UK and France to scrap their "one in, one out" asylum deal, warning that the arrangement poses a grave risk to human rights.
In a formal letter, nine UN experts cautioned that the agreement could lead to serious breaches of international law. The document highlights several case studies involving asylum seekers, including survivors of human trafficking and torture, who suffered mistreatment while being detained and deported.
The experts raised specific alarms over how people are chosen for the program, calling the selection process arbitrary. They also expressed deep concern for the safety of vulnerable individuals caught in the system. Supporting the UN’s stance, a director for refugee rights noted that the current agreement directly exposes displaced people to severe harm.
