UK activists demand tougher laws to follow ban on AI deepfakes

Victims and activists are calling for better safeguards against AI-generated sexually explicit images as a new law making the creation of such content a crime goes into effect. The advocacy group Stop Image-Based Abuse has submitted a petition asking for civil legal options, such as court-ordered mandates to remove images from the internet.
One victim, Jodie, described the new legal changes as a hard-fought victory. However, she shared her frustration over how long it took to enforce these rules, arguing that the delay allowed more people to be targeted and victimized.
Other campaigners pointed out that the law fails to protect sex workers properly. They noted that when professional or commercial images are manipulated without consent, the legal system often treats it only as a copyright violation rather than a personal abuse. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said the government is also focusing on the companies that own the apps used to generate this content.
