Trump and Petro commit to joint anti-trafficking efforts at White House meeting

After months of trading public insults, Colombian President Gustavo Petro and U.S. President Donald Trump held a friendly, private meeting at the White House. Both governments released photos of the event. Petro shared a picture of a signed copy of Trump’s book, "The Art of the Deal," along with a printed photo featuring a handwritten note. He was also seen leaving the White House wearing a red "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) hat.
Trump described the meeting as productive and announced that the two leaders had reached an agreement on drug trafficking. However, there was no immediate word on whether the U.S. would remove Petro, his wife, his son, and his interior minister from the Treasury Department’s sanctions list. This list, managed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, restricts the financial activities of individuals and groups tied to illegal acts.
Petro stated that his administration has seized more cocaine than any other government in history. He also claimed to have given Trump the names of criminal bosses currently living in Dubai, Madrid, and Miami. Just before the meeting, Colombia extradited gang leader Andrés Felipe Marín Silva to the United States. Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez noted that this move proved Colombia is a reliable partner for the U.S.
