Three-robot system passes tests for exploring lava tubes on the Moon and Mars
February 5, 2026

Scientists have designed a new mission that uses a team of three robots to explore underground lava tubes on the Moon and Mars. A European research team developed the system, which can find cave entrances, set up sensors, and lower a scout rover into the depths on its own. Using these tools, the robots create detailed 3D maps of the cave interiors.
The team successfully tested this approach in the volcanic caves of Lanzarote, Spain. Their findings confirm that the mission is technically possible and shows how groups of robots working together can change the way we explore other planets. The study was published in the journal Science Robotics.
