A study of more than 500,000 people has revealed that those living with obesity are 70% more likely to be hospitalized or die from an infection. Researchers linked one in 10 infection-related deaths worldwide to obesity. Using data from Finland and the UK, the study showed that this risk grows as body weight increases. The lead author suggested that obesity might weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off illness. However, the research had some limitations. Because it relied on observational data (noting trends without a controlled experiment), it could not prove that obesity was the direct cause of the deaths.
