Storm Leonardo causes power outages and evacuations across Southern Europe and North Africa
February 6, 2026

Storm Leonardo continues to batter Europe and North Africa with torrential rain and fierce winds. The storm has swept across Spain and Portugal, triggering widespread floods, causing mass evacuations, and claiming at least one life in Portugal.
In southern Spain, the town of Grazalema has been drenched by over 700mm of rain. This record rainfall forced roughly 3,500 residents to flee their homes. Meanwhile, in northern Morocco, flash floods have displaced more than 100,000 people.
Meteorologists say the extreme weather is fueled by an "atmospheric river," which is a narrow corridor of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere that acts like a pipe in the sky. Forecasters expect the storm to stall over the region through early next week.
