At least 14 migrants died late Tuesday night after their speedboat crashed into a Greek Coast Guard ship off the island of Chios. Greek officials stated that the speedboat was performing dangerous maneuvers during a chase in the Chios Strait, near the town of Vrontados. The coast guard has not yet explained the specific details of how the two vessels collided.

Rescue teams saved 24 people, several of whom were badly hurt. The state broadcaster ERT reported that the injured included seven children, a pregnant woman, and two coast guard officers. Other passengers are still reported missing.

A large search and rescue mission began Tuesday night, using four coast guard ships, a private boat with civilian divers, and a helicopter. Authorities originally confirmed four deaths, but they recovered 10 more bodies by 11:00 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT), raising the total number of victims to 14.
