Russian General Vladimir Alekseyev is reportedly in critical condition after being shot. Alekseyev serves as a deputy director of Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU. An unknown gunman shot him several times in the stairwell of his Moscow apartment building.

While the motive remains unclear, reports suggest that suspicion may fall on Kyiv. One Russian politician has already blamed Ukraine for the attack, though he provided no evidence to back up the claim. Alekseyev is currently under sanctions by both the United States and the United Kingdom for his alleged role in interfering with foreign elections and the 2018 Salisbury nerve agent attack.
