Robot dog patrols Mount Etna for volcanic gases to keep people safe
February 5, 2026
Researchers from ETH Zurich recently sent a robotic dog to Mount Etna to track volcanic gases. This four-legged robot, outfitted with a mass spectrometer and various sensors, relies on artificial intelligence to navigate over jagged, uneven ground. During field tests, the robot successfully located several simulated gas sources and measured levels of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide near volcanic vents, known as fumaroles. The team plans to conduct more trials to help the robot become fully autonomous. Their goal is to eventually keep people out of harm's way by using these robots to explore dangerous environments.
