A new report warns that full-time unpaid carers in the UK are in desperate need of more help. According to the Resolution Foundation, 1 million people currently provide at least 35 hours of unpaid care every week. The study found that for carers from poorer backgrounds, one in three are unable to take a job because of their duties at home.

A government spokesperson stated that they recognize the struggles carers face. They noted that the government has raised the earnings limit for the carer's allowance, which is the weekly benefit paid to those looking after someone, and is currently reviewing policies on carer’s leave.

This follows a 2024 investigation by the Guardian, which revealed a systemic issue where many unpaid carers were accidentally overpaid by the state. As a result, many now face the burden of paying back thousands of pounds in debt.
