Quebec urged to offer free shingles vaccines starting at age 50
February 6, 2026
This article discusses the push to provide the shingles vaccine for free to all Quebec residents aged 50 and older. Currently, the provincial government only covers the cost for people 71 and older, or for those 18 and up who have weakened immune systems. Groups such as the Quebec Lung Association and the FADOQ (the province's largest seniors' federation) are calling for the vaccine to be free for all seniors. They want the eligibility age lowered to 50, which aligns with recommendations made by the Quebec Immunization Committee back in 2018. The committee notes that the risk of shingles rises significantly after age 50, and that a broader vaccination program would benefit both individual health and the public healthcare system.
