Quebec protests set to challenge cuts to PEQ immigration program with backing from unions and officials
February 7, 2026
Protests are set to take place across several Quebec cities this Saturday to oppose the cancellation of the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ). These rallies have gained backing from major labor unions and elected officials from two political parties.
The Union of Quebec Municipalities has also spoken out against the move, calling for a "grandfather clause" to protect those already in the system. While the Immigration Minister has promised to select affected healthcare workers through a new specialized program, advocacy groups say this does not go far enough. They are demanding a universal grandfather clause, a legal provision that would allow all current workers to remain eligible under the old rules regardless of the recent changes.
