Queensland Proposes Strict New Laws to Combat Hate Speech

The Queensland government has introduced a plan to overhaul hate speech laws, targeting specific slogans and symbols linked to rising tensions. Under the proposed changes, using phrases such as "from the river to the sea" or "globalize the intifada" could result in up to two years in prison if the words are used to harass or offend others.

Premier David Crisafulli stated that the crackdown is a direct response to the recent terror attack in Bondi. Supporting the move, Attorney-General Deb Frecklington argued that these specific phrases are inherently offensive and intended to stir up public hatred.

The legislative package also includes the following measures:

Jason Steinberg, president of the Queensland Jewish Board of Deputies, praised the reforms. He noted that the Jewish community has felt increasingly targeted and that these laws are a necessary step toward making residents feel safe in public spaces.
