This article examines perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) commonly found in waterproof clothing, such as Gore-Tex, and the risks they may pose. These chemicals, linked to health issues including certain types of cancer, are already banned in clothing in France and several American states, while Canada is currently drafting stricter regulations. Canadian tests have detected these substances in items like children's mittens, even though manufacturers are increasingly switching to alternative treatments. While wearing these garments appears to carry limited health risks, as most exposure comes through food and water, the chemicals' entire life cycle pollutes the environment. Experts do not suggest throwing away your old gear, but they do stress the urgent need to regulate these "forever chemicals.
