NSW Police to seize and destroy illegal e-bikes in new government crackdown

The NSW government has announced a new crackdown on illegally modified e-bikes. Under the plan, the transport minister stated that police will be granted the power to seize and destroy any e-bike that has been tampered with to exceed the legal speed limit of 25km/h.
To enforce these rules, the government will draft new laws and equip officers with portable testing devices to measure an e-bike’s power output on the spot. This announcement comes after a recent incident where a large group of e-bike riders swarmed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as rising concerns over injuries and fatal accidents involving the vehicles.
While the government aims to improve safety, an opposition spokesperson criticized the plan. They argued that the new measures are a slow, bureaucratic response that fails to address the underlying issue of reckless rider behavior.
