Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is projected to win a landslide victory in the Lower House, according to recent forecasts. The national broadcaster NHK predicts the LDP could secure between 274 and 328 seats in the 465-seat chamber.
If the party reaches the 310-seat mark, it would hold a two-thirds "supermajority." This would give the LDP the power to override any vetoes from the Upper House, the secondary branch of Japan's parliament.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the first woman to lead the country, dissolved the Lower House in January to trigger the vote. Voters are heading to the polls as Japan struggles with economic hurdles, including rising prices and a weak yen. At the same time, the government is navigating growing political friction with China.
