New EU loan to Ukraine features dedicated UK defense spending clause
February 4, 2026

The European Union has approved a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, including a specific provision that could benefit the United Kingdom. This new clause allows Ukraine to use the funds to purchase military equipment and defense hardware from British companies.
For this arrangement to move forward, the UK must agree to pay a fair share of the EU's borrowing costs. This financial contribution would be calculated based on the total value of the contracts won by UK firms. While the plan is set, it still requires final approval from the European Parliament. If it passes, the first round of funding is expected to be available by April.
