Montreal blue-collar workers threaten an all-out strike if wage talks fail
February 4, 2026
Montreal’s outside workers are threatening an all-out, indefinite strike if contract talks with the city do not improve. Jean-Pierre Lauzon, the union president, stated that if Wednesday’s one-day walkout fails to move negotiations forward, the group will consider ramping up their labor actions.
The 6,000 union members are pushing for higher raises, calling the city’s current offer of 11% over five years insufficient. During the strike on Wednesday, essential services like snow removal continued, but other operations, including garbage collection, came to a standstill.
