This article tells the story of Lisette Perron, a woman who has spent the last eight years living in a small studio apartment after a difficult life. Despite her own struggles, she spends her time helping other women in need. Ms. Perron lives with a permanent ostomy, a surgical opening that requires her to use medical pouches and other supplies every day. These supplies cost $600 a month. In the past, the Quebec Health Insurance Board (RAMQ) covered the full cost through her social assistance benefits.
However, everything changed when she turned 65. Because she now receives Old Age Security instead of social assistance, the RAMQ only covers $1,500 per year. This leaves her with a $5,700 annual shortfall. To get by, she has used up her personal savings, received a $100 discount from her pharmacist, and sought help from the office of Member of the National Assembly Manon Massé.
The communications director for Health Minister Sonia Bélanger stated that an analysis is underway with Santé Québec to provide clinical support. Despite this, No formal solution has been reached. Ms. Perron says no one has told her what she is supposed to do once she can no longer afford the supplies she needs to live.
