A coalition of legal organizations has called on the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to investigate and arrest retired Israeli Major General Doron Almog. The request centers on allegations of past war crimes and coincides with Almog’s visit to Australia alongside Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

The groups claim Almog committed war crimes in Gaza in 2002. These allegations include ordering the destruction of family homes and involvement in an airstrike that caused civilian deaths. Almog denies the charges. In 2005, he narrowly avoided arrest in London after being tipped off about a warrant that has since been withdrawn.

The legal filing also asks authorities to look into Almog’s current work as the chairman of the Jewish Agency, a major non-profit organization. The AFP confirmed it has passed the request to its Special Investigations Command for review.
