The City of Laval is testing Canada’s first residential road paved with porous asphalt. Located in the Sainte-Rose neighborhood, this "sponge street" features a special surface that lets water soak into the ground at a very high rate, which keeps puddles from forming and stops rainwater from running off into the sewers. The project cost a total of $880,752 before taxes, and researchers will monitor its performance over the next five years. Laval is currently looking into building more streets like this, and several other municipalities are watching the experiment with interest.
