Joswar Torres Released as Protests Erupt and New Charges Target Veteran
February 9, 2026

After spending seven months in ICE detention, Joswar Torres, a Venezuelan migrant, has been released following a federal judge's ruling. The judge found that the government violated Torres's constitutional rights during his time in custody.
His detention led to a massive protest of nearly 2,000 people, which eventually resulted in conspiracy charges against nine participants. Federal prosecutors are now pushing for a six-year prison sentence for one of those protesters, Bajun Mavalwalla, who is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan.
