Japan's record snowfall leaves 35 dead as officials warn of avalanche risk
February 6, 2026

Record-breaking snowfall across northern Japan has claimed dozens of lives. Authorities confirmed that 35 people have died in snow-related accidents since 20 January, with most fatalities involving residents clearing heavy drifts from their roofs or homes. The severe weather has also impacted foreign tourists, including two Australians who died in separate incidents at ski resorts. Officials are now warning that rising temperatures and melting snow will increase the risk of avalanches and icy paths, urging the public to stay alert. Deaths caused by winter weather are a recurring issue in Japan, with 68 people losing their lives last winter.
