Ireland makes world-first basic income program for artists permanent
February 10, 2026

Ireland is set to make its Basic Income for the Arts a permanent fixture following a successful three-year trial. The government describes the initiative as the first of its kind in the world. Under the program, selected artists in the Republic of Ireland receive a weekly payment of €325 for a three-year term. A recent study revealed that the pilot program effectively paid for itself through its broader economic impact. Additionally, the funding significantly lowered stress levels among artists and reduced their dependence on outside sources of income.
