Hundreds at Washington Post walk out as staffing cuts follow strategic reset
February 4, 2026

The Washington Post laid off hundreds of employees, cutting roughly one-third of its total workforce. The editor in chief described the move as a "strategic reset," blaming the cuts on a crowded media market and difficulties reaching new readers. As part of the changes, the paper will shut down its current sports department, overhaul local news, scale back international reporting, cut the books department, and pause the Post Reports podcast. Former executive editor Martin Baron called the layoffs "among the darkest days" in the newsroom's history. Meanwhile, the employees' union argued that the cuts could have been avoided and organized a protest in response.
