How gut bacteria sense nutrients to balance their ecosystem, according to new study of cell receptors
February 9, 2026

This article explores how beneficial gut bacteria pick up on chemical signals in their environment. An international research team discovered that these bacteria, specifically a group called Clostridia, can detect a wide variety of nutrients such as lactate and formate.
The study shows that "cross-feeding," a process where different bacteria share metabolites (the byproducts of digestion), helps keep the gut ecosystem stable. Researchers also identified several new groups of sensory receptors in these bacteria that were previously unknown. According to the team, this work provides a much deeper understanding of how helpful gut microbes sense and react to the world around them.
