A gray wolf has entered Los Angeles County for the first time in over a century. The wolf, a three-year-old female with a black coat known as BEY03F, crossed the county line on the morning of February 7. A wolf specialist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife noted that this is the southernmost confirmed sighting of a gray wolf in modern history. The expert added that she was likely wandering in search of a mate.

The report also highlights a legal battle over the government's past refusal to develop a national recovery plan for the species. Despite these challenges, a federal wildlife service determined in 2025 that drafting a new recovery plan was no longer necessary.
