The report states that Olivier Hamel, an independent claims adjuster, was arrested after he uncovered a $105,000 calculation error made by Desjardins Insurance. The disciplinary committee of the Chambre de l'assurance de dommages (the provincial regulatory body for property and casualty insurance) acquitted him of an ethics charge related to the commission he earned. The committee ruled that he had actually provided exceptional service to his client.

While the client expressed satisfaction with the results, a complaint from the Caisse Desjardins credit union led to Hamel's arrest when he attempted to cash the settlement check. Desjardins has since admitted that it had to increase payouts for roughly 50 policyholders after discovering its own errors in calculating inflation rates.
