Human Rights Watch warns that democracy is in a "recession" worldwide. Currently, 72% of the global population lives under autocratic rulers, a level of repression not seen since 1985. Philippe Bolopion, the organization's executive director, stated that the entire system supporting human rights is now "in peril."

HRW's annual report lists actions taken by the Trump administration over the past year that purportedly attack the pillars of American democracy and the international rule of law. These include undermining public trust in elections, reducing government accountability, and attacking the independence of the courts. The report also notes instances of defying court orders and intimidating political opponents, the media, law firms, universities, and activist groups. It further highlights the intimidation of comedians and the deportation of individuals to countries where they risk being tortured.

The report also takes aim at the UK, claiming the Labour government’s harsh immigration policies have fueled anti-migrant sentiment. It condemns the government for cracking down on the right to protest and failing to help people struggling with the rising cost of living.

Bolopion urged democratic nations, including the UK, Canada, and members of the European Union, to form a strategic alliance to protect global rules. He noted that recent public protests in Minneapolis, Iran, and Morocco prove that civil society is still fighting, offering reasons for action rather than despair.
