Data shows Monzo refused fraud refunds in 34 percent of cases where it was wrong to do so
February 7, 2026

The Guardian reports that Monzo unfairly refused to refund thousands of people who were targets of fraud and scams. Data from the Financial Ombudsman Service, an official body that settles disputes between banks and customers, shows that the bank made the wrong call in 34% of the fraud complaints it dealt with last year. NatWest and HSBC had similar records, wrongly turning down 33% and 32% of their cases. A spokesperson for Monzo noted that some of these incidents happened more than two years ago, and said the bank has since put more money into technology to help stop fraud.
