Climate adaptation could cost taxpayers 14 billion a year by 2050
February 9, 2026
This article examines a study by the Canadian Climate Institute regarding the costs of adapting public infrastructure to climate change. According to the study, taxpayers could face costs of up to $14 billion every year by 2050 if governments fail to upgrade these systems. On the other hand, investing roughly $3 billion per year in proactive adaptation could save between $5 billion and $10 billion annually over the long term. Municipalities own the majority of public infrastructure and would likely bear the brunt of the costs if no action is taken. To address these risks, the report offers six recommendations for making infrastructure more resilient to changing weather patterns.
