Clean energy drove 90 percent of China's investment growth, report finds
February 5, 2026

An analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air reveals that China's clean energy industry drove more than 90% of the country's investment growth last year. The sector is now so large that it rivals the size of the world’s top economies, trailing only seven nations. It also accounted for over one third of China's total economic expansion.
The study showed that these green industries nearly doubled in value between 2022 and 2025, bringing in 15.4 trillion yuan last year. Despite this growth, developers have proposed building new coal plants. Meanwhile, climate activists say that solar power is on track to overtake coal as China’s primary energy source by 2026.
