Caltech and USC researchers develop a new 3D color imaging technique called RUS-PAT
February 6, 2026

A new medical imaging technique produces 3D color images that reveal the structure of soft tissue and the detailed movement of blood. This method, known as RUS-PAT, merges ultrasound with photoacoustic imaging technology.
Researchers at Caltech and USC developed the system to overcome the shortcomings of common tools like standard ultrasounds, MRIs, and CT scans. After testing the system on human volunteers, the team believes it could enhance breast cancer imaging, help doctors track nerve damage from diabetes, and advance brain research.
