Bangladesh records Nipah virus death linked to raw date juice, WHO reports
February 7, 2026

The World Health Organization reported that a woman in northern Bangladesh died from the Nipah virus in January. The patient, who was in her late 40s, suffered from a fever and headaches before passing away a week later. She had recently drunk raw date palm sap but had not traveled anywhere else. According to the WHO, officials monitored 35 people who had been in contact with her; all tested negative for the virus. The risk of the disease spreading to other countries is currently considered low. Nipah is a deadly infection usually passed to humans through food contaminated by infected bats, though it does not spread easily from person to person.
