Australia will repair Gaza war graves damaged during Israeli military operations
February 5, 2026

The Australian government has promised to fix the graves of Australian soldiers damaged by military bulldozing in Gaza. Satellite images show headstones pushed aside and the ground torn up at the Gaza War Cemetery. More than 250 Australians are buried there, and the most severe damage occurred in a section dedicated to those who died in World War II. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission intends to protect and repair the site as soon as it is safe to enter, though it warned that a full restoration will take time. The Israel Defense Forces said the damage resulted from defensive operations in an active combat zone, where soldiers had to clear threats from militants who were using the cemetery for cover.
