AFPC union threatens to sue Ottawa over mandatory return to office order
February 6, 2026
This article discusses threats from the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) to sue the federal government. The government recently ordered staff in core departments to work from the office at least four days a week starting in July. Managers are expected to return to the office full-time as early as May.
PSAC argues that changing remote work rules while contract talks are still ongoing is grounds for a lawsuit. The union stated it will do everything possible to overturn the decision and that "nothing is off the table." These new rules apply to core departments under the Treasury Board. The Canada Revenue Agency has also signaled it plans to follow the same approach.
