This article reports that the Federation of Bus Transporters (FTA) is speaking out against $200 million in cuts to public transit by the Legault government. According to the FTA, this reduction to the Public Transit Development Assistance Program will lower the funding available for each intercity bus route, putting both local and regional services at risk.
Nicolas Maheux, a vice-president of the FTA, explains that these cuts could lead to reduced service or the total shutdown of certain routes. For example, his own company is currently reviewing the future of two lines in the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region. The organization is also criticizing the program’s rules, which they claim are impractical. They argue that the funding is out of reach for many because it requires a financial commitment from local municipalities before any aid is granted.
